Platte Health Center/Avera to Start Major Expansion Project

Need for the facility

The Platte Health Center/Avera Health has seen substantial growth over the past few years.  Both inpatients and outpatients are offered a wide variety of services at the facility.  Yet, due to a lack of square footage the facility is unable to continue to expand our service growth.  Inefficiencies have been created in certain ancillary departments as much of the equipment has been spread throughout the facility.  The proposed building project addresses these inefficiencies and maximizes on the efficiencies that have already been created.

With the ever-changing environment of healthcare, the need for privacy is becoming demanding.  As the “Baby Boomers” start to reach the ages where they are seeking medical care on a regular basis, they make it clear that they want to receive this care in a private setting.  The need for single, private inpatient rooms is very clear.  Also, a percentage of outpatient services are provided in an open environment.  Overall, the facility has outgrown our existing facility and needs more square footage for patients, staff and storage.

Proposed Facility

The addition to the current facility will basically replace the existing patient wing with a new 25,000 square foot patient wing.  Inside the addition will be nine private patient rooms.  Three of these private rooms will be individually designated as an isolation/sleep room, cardiac patient room and EICU room.  Additionally, three will be three semi-private rooms with two patient’s beds in each for times of high demand.  Included into this addition are a new labor/delivery room and OB patient room.  The entire addition is equipped with the proper storage and utility space.

Once the existing patient wing is vacated, the existing facility will be repartitioned for the Laboratory, Radiology, Surgery and Administration department.  The laboratory department will double its existing size and include private patient draw stations.  Inside the radiology department will be separate areas for a CT scanner, X-Ray machine and mammography machine.  A new surgical suite will be constructed that will focus on one main surgical room, and additional area for recovery.  At the front on the facility will be handicapped accessible entrance that will lead through the administration department.  Private registration rooms and office space for administration personnel will all be located in this area.  Medical Records and Information Technology departments will all be located in this area.  Filling the gap between the clinic and the hospital will be the Rehab department, which will house several patient treatment rooms and a large gym for other rehabilitation treatment.

Underneath the existing hospital and the new addition will be room for the Maintenance, Housekeeping and Laundry department.  This space will also be equipped with a large conference room, employee classroom, and designated spaces for additional storage/departments.  Also, a space has been created at ground-level for central supply.  At the top of the new addition will be a heli-stop for air transfers of patients.

A project of this magnitude speaks volumes for the employees of the Platte Health Center/Avera and those that seek their medical care in Platte.
